New Section on WW2 Period Arms, Corps and Services Other Ranks Cap Badges Complete

New Section on WW2 Period Arms, Corps and Services Other Ranks Cap Badges Complete

This latest section attempts to give WW2 badge collectors a definitive guide to the British Army badges worn by supporting services through this conflict. Where an example is not available for sale I have occasionally used an image from Kipling and King and acknowledge this use here. Those badges marked Comm JT have come from a single old collection that was mounted on 'linoleum' tiles and this has produced an air seal to the backs which means the badges on the reverse look like they were made yesterday! They have aged nicely to the fronts but those with the mint backs have clearly never been issued. Please see the photos attached of some of those listed on these old cards.

A finely cast side cap badge with two original lugs to reverse. GVI cypher. Circa 3.4cm tall. Officially this badge was not sanctioned with a GVI cypher until 1948 for wear on the foreign service helmet. WW2 RA Royal Artillery Field Service Cap Grenade - Canadian Made W.Scully

WW2 RA Royal Artillery Field Service Cap Grenade - Canadian Made W.Scully

An attractive die cast gilt badge made by W.Scully of Montreal, Canada. Seven flames confirm this as Royal Artillery.

On the SD cap Other Ranks wore the service dress cap badge (i.e. the large Gun) until ACI 1179 of 1941 authorised the wearing of a gilt grenade.

09.06.41. Telegram sent by WO to all Commands ‘RA cap badge will be of the ‘grenade’ type. Collar badge (Catalogue CB 0520) will be utilised for this service. Cap badges of the ‘gun’ type (Catalogue CB 0289) already in possession will continue to be worn until unserviceable, and no complete change over by units to the new badge will be permitted. No objections will be raised to both types of badge being worn in any one unit.’ 26.06.41. Army Orders refers to above, permitting retention of ‘gun’ badge for horsed units wearing ‘Cap SD Stiff’.

The first order for the plastic grenade was placed on 10.02.42. It was for wear both as a head-dress and collar badge, however, collar badges had not been authorised on battledress and SD Tunics were almost obsolete by this date.

By 1951 the Gun badge had again been authorised for wear by Other Ranks on the beret.
