A scarce West African threatre trio of medals to Thomas Frederick Gisborne Mayer, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P as follows:
1914-15 Star ( impressed T.F.G. Mayer).
British War Medal, 1914 - 1918 (Capt. T.F.G. Mayer).
Allied Victory Medal, 1914 - 1919 (Capt T.F.G. Mayer).
An unusual recipient for a scarce campaign. A named 1914-15 star without rank or unit is also very scarce.
Medal Card index confirms T/Captain with the West African Medical & Nursing Staff. Theatre of War 4c and date of entry 14/7/15. Attached Medical Services Cameroon Expeditionary Force as Senior Medical Officer. Non effective on returning to Colonial Govt Service at the termination of hostilities in Cameroons.
He was a Member of Royal College of Surgeons, England (M.R.C.S., Eng) 1/8/02, Licensed Royal College of Physicians, London (L.R.C.P) 1902 (London Hospital). Special Plague Officer, the Punjab 1902 - 03, Appointed to West African Medical Service 16/01/04. Seconded for special service at the Colonial Office 29/4/12, appointed to the Gambia 13/11/13. Official Member of the Legislative Council. Author of: A Formulatory of Drugs for the Tropics (Sierra Leone Govt. Press, 1917) and Leprosy Relief Work.
He left the Gambia in 1924 to reside at "Welbeck", Gore Road, Burnham, Maidenhead. He is described as late Senior Medical Officer, West Africa Medical Staff. In 1931 he returned to West Africa, this time to Lagos, Nigeria. By 1941 he had retired to England and is listed as living at Wychwood, Nightingale Rd, E. Horsley, Surrey and is described as Secretary of the Nigerian Branch of the British Empire Leprosy Relief Assn. In 1945 he is listed as living at Widcot, Culmhead, Taunton, Somerset. From 1947 until his death at the age of 70 in late 1953, he was resident at 296, Cooden Drive, Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex. He was the grandson of Thomas Walton Mayer (1814 - 1887) who was instrumental in obtaining the Royal Charter for the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
