Pair of Framed Boer War Stevenographs - Baden Powell and Lord Roberts
Stevenographs are silk-woven pictures which were made popular by a Coventry silk weaver Thomas Stevens (1828-1888). Stevens used his improved version of the Jacquard loom to weave coloured silk pictures and illustrations. His family continued producing them from his factory after his death. Royalty and Boer War subjects were particularly popular. They are very sought after today.
This pair of Stevenographs of Baden Powell and Lord Roberts are attractively framed in their original contemporary matching frames. The images show some signs of age but they are still bright and attractive, although mounts are darkened probably by nicotene from a smoking environment (gentlemens' club?). Some damage to each of the frame edges (as per photos) but not visible from the front. Each frame is circa 34cm by 24.5cm. They came together so we would like to sell them together.
These make a heavy lot, and given the glass in the frames, we will only post to a UK mainland address.
