ATTRACTIVE MATCHED PAIR OF FLUTED STEEL BESAGEWS

An excellent matched pair of gothic style fluted besagews. They are a great example of the armouring ingenuity of the 15th century. The besagew supplied great protection to the armpit, and was mostly seen on armours coming out of Augsburg, Innsbruck, Nuremburg and Landshut, in the period 1450 - 1490.

The besagew could either be riveted to the shoulder defence, usually to the spaulder or pointed to the mail shirt beneath and tied on.

Fluted evenly with great care, these besagews show true craftsmanship, straight sharp flutes radiating out across this 19cm diameter surface (making them quite large) and climbing up to create a high conical defense of eleven spines, 3cm in depth.

Purchased from the American John Woodman Higgins Armory Museum sale, although unattributed, they have some age to them. We consider that they are 19th century high quality reproductions, possibly produced by the well known German armourer of that time, Ernst Schmidt. See the following URL for more details:
