Jewish Battalions Royal Fusiliers bronzed brass Cap Badge
A good scarce bronzed brass example on short slider. Worn by the 38th, 40th and 42nd Jewish Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers which were raised later in the First World War in 1917, otherwise known as the Jewish Legion. The badge was in the design of the Menora ( a seven-branched candlestick ) on a scroll inscribed in Hebrew “Kadimah” (which means Eastward). In good condition, there is a slight solder run from the attachment of the slider on to the front of the badge. Circa 4.3cm tall and 3.5cm wide.
K&K Vol 1 No 1145 refers.
In 1917, after 3 years of lobbying by both the British Jewish community and its many friends in the wider community, the British government agreed to the raising of exclusively Jewish battalions, attached to the Royal Fusiliers, to fight in the British Army, against the Turks in Palestine / Israel.
