Taunton ( Somerset ) Volunteers Tunic Button, circa 1794 - 1802 ( Revolutionary / Napoleonic Wars)

Scarce, circa 22mm in diameter. Flat button with shank still in tact but fragile and with one crack. Excavated condition, but better than one usually finds. Some small splits, copper, would originally have been gilt washed. Worn circa 1794 - 1802. Detail in part is feint and it is hard to read the motto strap below the crown and my thanks to Kevin for confirming that from an example known to him it reads " Defendamus ".

The Taunton Volunteers were commanded by Major John Whitmarsh. They were embodied on the 21 June 1794. The unit is listed in the Fencibles, Militia, Yeomanry and Volunteers list of 1797.
