WW1 10th West Yorkshire Regiment (The Prince of Wales’s Own) Silver Hallmarked and Enamel Tribute Medal / Medallion / Watch Fob - to Leonard Clegg
Attractive enamelled and silver hallmarked WW1 tribute medallion with suspension loop. Not sure of the significance of the stripped red and yellow shield to obverse, but enamel in good condition, with circlet neatly engraved "10th West York Regt." The reverse is engraved "Pte. Clegg, 75375, France. 1918 - 19." Some minor surface wear but otherwise in very good condition. Circa 4.1cm tall excluding suspension ring. Birmingham Hallmarks with date letter 't" for 1918.
The 10th West Yorkshire Regiment (The Prince of Wales’s Own) is one of the ‘forgotten‘ battalions of the Great War. Its part in the Battle of Arras features little in recent histories and its role in other actions has been also largely overlooked. Formed at York in September 1914, 10 West Yorks had trained at Wareham and was sent to France in July 1915. It saw action in and around the Hooge and Bluff sectors and at Fricourt on 1 July, suffering enormous casualties on the opening day of the Somme offensive in 1916. Eleven officers and 299 other ranks were killed in total. Clegg seems to have been one of the lucky ones, joining later in the war and a survivor. With copy of his WW1 Medal Card Index confirming his entitlement to a BWM and VM pair.
