4th Durham Rifle Volunteers Other Ranks Helmet , circa 1880 - 1887
A scarce maltese cross pattern blackened helmet plate with three original lugs to the reverse. Would have been worn with a red velvet backing cloth. In very good condition, only obvious defect being a slight twisting to one edge of the cross arm on the left closest to crown (see final photo), but now I am being picky! Scarce.
The rifle volunteer companies of the 1st Administrative Battalion ( Durham City, Beamish, Chester-le-street, Birtley and the Felling Corps ) under the colonelcy of the Earl of Durham and the command of Lieut-Col Joicey (Beamish Corps) were re-designated as the 4th Durham Rifle Volunteers in the 1880 reorganisation. In 1887 they were redesignated as the 4th Volunteer Battalion, DLI.
