Roy Marlow M.M. - A WW2 escapers tale of daring do from a Royal Air Force ( RAF ) Air Gunner
"Beyond the Wire - An underage Air Gunner's Private War" an autobiography by Roy Marlow MM. Paperback (1997). A good clean copy in good second hand condition with stamp of previous owner's details on frontis. 158pp.
This is a highly unusual account, especially to an RAF aircrew recipient of an "escaper's " Military Medal. What is even more remarkable is that he joined the RAF at the age of 15 having lied about his age and found himself shot down at the age of 17 over North Africa as the tail gunner in a Wellington operating with No 70 Squadron. Most MM's to the RAF went to the RAF Regiment,so an unusual award to air crew. An engaging account, and when I finished reading it was hard to believe that what befell this young man in his determined escape attempts was to somebody who was still a teenager when the war ended. Great stuff.
