Bedfordshire Yeomanry Gilding Metal Cap Badge
A die struck gilding metal cap badge with the correct voids between the legs. Long slider to the reverse. The slider appears to have been subsequently reinforced at the join with the badge with silver solder, otherwise in very good condition.
The Bedfordshire Yeomanry wore the 'Chicken in a Castle' badge for a very long time at least until they amalgamated with the Hertfordshire Yeomanry in 1961. The eagle represented the arms of the Beauchamp family and the Castle on its breast is said to be the old Bedford Castle which once stood on the north bank of the River Ouse.
This unit was 48th in the order of precedence of yeomanry regiments. First raised in 1901.
