O Force Jordan Printed formation designation cloth sign badge

Printed cloth formation sign. Swan on yellow green background. Circa 5cm square. Scarce.

'O' Force was a British force based at Aqaba after the creation of the State of Jordan in 1948 to defend against Israeli attack. The first British regiment based there was a battalion of the Lincolnshire regiment commanded by a Colonel Oulton, 'O' Force was named after him. British regiments were usually transferred from the Canal Zone Districts for six months stints in Aqaba (such stints being termed "swanning about", and it was this phrase which was apparently the inspiration for the swan in the design). There was also a Battery of the 80th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment together with Royal Engineers and other Corps troops. All British Forces left in 1957.
