WW2 Poland - Polish 2 Corps Breast badge - numbered to reverse
Silver plated die cast bronze badge sadly now missing its screw post fitting and retaining nut. The number 066892 has been stamped to the reverse (the recipient's army number?). Circa 3.7cm tall and 2cm wide. There is a small letter 'H' stamped to bottom left outer edge of the shield which initially is very hard to see, but I presume this related to the die number.
The British authorized the Polish 2nd Corps to wear the 8th Army patch after their outstanding performance at the Battle of Monte Cassino. The mermaid with a sword & shield was the symbol of the 2nd Corps and represented the arms of the City of Warsaw.
The Polish II Corps, 1943–1947, was a major tactical and operational unit of the Polish Armed Forces in the West during World War II. It was commanded by Lieutenant General W³adys³aw Anders and fought with distinction in the Italian Campaign, in particular at the Battle of Monte Cassino.
