Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry (32nd Foot) Other Ranks Victorian Brass Metal Cap Badge, 1896 - 1900 only
Die struck quality yellow brass cap badge with three original dark toned loops to the reverse. Some squeezing to loops and twisting but still functional. Sharp detail and scarce. Gaylor (p37) states this pattern worn prior to 1901, although the 1900 Dress Regulations for the British Army show the new white metal badge with the scroll "Cornwall". Ivall & Thomas confirm it was worn from 1896 to 1900 following the dropping of the Glengarry cap from 1895. Whilst some regiments wore their collar badge in the new 'Austrian (later 'fore-and-aft') pattern of field service cap, the DCLI adopted a new device, as for sale here. ((Item 93, p28 Military Insignia of Cornwall - Ivall & Thomas who also claim it was worn on the Pagri). Circa 4.2cm tall.
K&K Vol 1 No 606 refers (shown out of sequence next to the Somerset Light Infantry cap badge, so I have followed that mistake here for the sake of consistency).
