1st Corps Troops Royal Artillery Embroidered Felt Cloth Formation Sign
An embroidered formation sign flash badge comprising a white spear head on a diamond divided vertically, right dark blue, left red. In unissued condition.
It is not certain when this particular sign was adopted. The basic 1st Corps design adopted the traditional Corps colours of red and white and the device of a spearhead symbolising the fact that 1st Corps at Aldershot was the only Corps in permanent existence before the War and was therefore the spearhead of the British Army. The sign was used in conjunction with a number of specialist Corps' colours, in this case the red and blue of the Artillery. The red colour in artillery badges was always worn to the front so this item would be for the left arm. The Corps badge was adopted in 1940. The Corps was with the BEF in 1940 and thereafter involved in the defence of the UK. It took part in the Overlord invasion of Europe in 1944 and fought through to the end of war in Germany. Post-war, 1st Corps District administered Rhine Province and Westphalia. The basic sign was retained when the formation became part of the BAOR after reforming in 1951.
