WW1 Silver War Badge (SWB) to Staff Sister Lilian Annie Maude Kerr, Territorial Force Nursing Service (TFNS)

A SWB impressed 506790 issued to a nurse. An unmarked silver circlet inscribed 'For King And Empire Services Rendered' bearing crowned 'GRI' Imperial Cypher to voided centre. In good condition with a fully functional and original pin and c clasp (top bend of pin snapped off but pin looks original). Circa 32mm in diameter. Safety chain fitted.

Miss Lilian Kerr served as a Staff Nurse as part of the TFNS in home hospitals from 27th July 1917 to 31 March 1919, in particular 1st London General Hospital. The entry from the CD ROM version SWB roll and a copy of her WW1 Medal Index Card (MIC) to be supplied, plus a selection of 6 printed papers from her service records which support the discussion of her service and also her appeal for the award of a SWB. The CD ROM SWB roll incorrectly states her enlistment date as 12/5/1919. Her papers confirm she joined the TFNS in 1917.

Approximately 1,150,000 badges were issued to all services, which had to be claimed and then approved. Lilian campaigned hard to get her SWB as her service papers show. Initially deemed ineligible for a disability pension, she appears to have won over the authorities on account of her Rheumatism which she claims resulted from nursing in an open-air ward. Prior to joining the Army, she served as a Matron at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. In 1921, her address was given as C/O Mrs Whymper, 37 Lovelace Gardens, Surbiton, Surrey.
