Colonial Africa - Sudan Political Service (SPS) Gilt Pagri Sun Helmet Badge

A small gilt badge with stout pin and original fittings; fully functional. Circa 32mm in diameter. Fire gilt bright and in great condition overall. Worn circa 1899- 1955.

The example of this badge without the date '1899' is shown in Renfrew (No 1305) but is a hallmarked silver version with the date letter for 1931. This particular example, in this metal and finish, is not illustrated.

The Sudan Political Service was one of the smallest of its colonial brethren and never had more than 150 members at any one time and no more than 500 served throughout its existence.
