"The Fifth Fusiliers" is an updated and enlarged version of the first edition published in 1988. This edition is also divided into two parts. The first part describes the origins and composition of the Regiment from its raising in Holland in 1674 until it was absorbed into the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers on St George's Day, 23rd April, 1968. As well as covering the regular Battalions and the Depot, this part gives details of the Regiment's other components, the militia, volunteer, territorial and war raised units. It also lists the Regiment's Battle Honours.

The second and largest part of the book describes the badges and various items of insignia known or thought to have been worn in the Regiment. These comprise some 750 pieces of which 550 are illustrated, mostly at full size and in colour, including items from the Imperial War Museum, and from the Regimental Museum in Alnwick.

With a Foreword by Field Marshal Sir John Chapple, this is the most comprehensive coverage of the insignia of the Northumberland Fusiliers. It will serve as an example for other Regiments to follow.

I can personally recommend this book. As the proud owner of the 1st Edition, which Denis kindly signed for me way back when in 1988, I was completely blown away by the 2nd Edition: large format, hard bound, running to over 200 pages and splendidly presented in its dust jacket of gosling green, the facing colour used by the Fifth throughout much of its life. It is in my view such an extensive revision it is really a new book. No self respecting Northumberland Fusilier collector can afford to be without it - numbers are limited so get your copy now - The Quartermaster.
