WW1 New Zealand (NZ) 27th Mounted Rifles Reinforcements Bi-Metal Cap Badge
This is the bi-metal, thin die struck brass with applied silver plated wing, and the low tail example for the 27th intake or draft, company. This series was worn by the 25th to the 47th companies, but with a respective change in number in the shield below the Pegasus winged horse front hooves. Two original hexagonal loops to the reverse. The die for the 25th badge has been used for the main body of the badge as the number 25 can be seen on the reverse. To the front shield a small brass disk has been applied with the number 27. Lowe claims that these individual numbers were applied in white metal discs for 26th Mounted Rifles reinforcements onwards but this one has always been brass. In very good condition.
The mounted rifles reinforcement badges are much harder to find than their infantry counterparts. Scarce.
