Zululand Mounted Rifles Slouch Hat Cap Badge, circa 1903 - 1913
A stunning Zululand Mounted Rifles (ZMR) slouch hat cap badge, worn only c. 1904 -1913. Die cast, with three original lugs to the reverse. Circa 4.7cms tall and 5cms wide. Rhino above motto scroll is "Wa Tshe Tsha" and the scroll below this carries the words Zululand Mounted Rifles. In superb condition with no damage to horn or tail, etc. Rare. (Collar badge sold as my item 58896).
The ZMR were absorbed by the Umvoti Mounted Rifles in 1913, one of many units that disappeared after the Union of South Africa was established.
The ZMR took part in the Natal 1906 campaign, suppressing the Bambata ( Zulu ) rebellion. Despite being a very small unit (circa 90-155 men), they received five Distinguished Conduct Medals. Apparently an Intelligence section was formed out of the ZMR. The role of the ZMR in the Natal 1906 campaign (Bambata rebellion) can be read in this super account by Ken Gillings:
