EIIR 7th (Duke of Edinburgh’s Own) Gurkha Rifles Pipers Frosted Silver Plaid Brooch Badge
EIIR 7th (Duke of Edinburgh’s Own) Gurkha Rifles Piper's Plaid Brooch, superb quality frosted silvered badge with crowned laurel spray, Maltese cross with the centre having crossed Kukri knives and number 7, around the edge ‘GURKHA RIFLES’. Reverse with backing plate and broad vertical pin and hook fixing. Fine quality made badge but with some dulling to the frosted finish. Same pattern as worn by officers as a Shoulder Belt Plate (7GR A2), also fitted to a backing plate but with a strong vertical pin fitting making this is a piper's badge to pin to the plaid over the left shoulder. Worn from 1964 to 1968.
"Insignia of the 7th Duke of Edinburgh's Own Gurkha Rifles" published by the Gurkha Museum, p66 and 7GR P9 refer. Given the quality one can only wonder if this was an item only worn by the Pipe Major.
I also have a white metal example available of this design (7GR P10) which is not on a backing plate nor of this quality which was worn by 7GR Pipers in the same period. I also have the last pattern 7GR P8A. References are those from the Gurkha Museum publication referred to above. Please email if of interest.
