5th Fusiliers (Northumberland Fusiliers) Bandsmans Cap Badge - Indian Mutiny circa 1857
Neatly cast in white metal and theatre made. The band was about 30 strong and this is unique to them. A scarce undamaged example. Three original copper loops to reverse.
As worn by members of the 1st Battalion 5th Fusiliers Band when stationed in India during the Mutiny (as supported by photographic evidence). Wood claims worn until circa 1873 but I have a photo from 1863 of the band wearing 5 over a grenade following their return to Shorncliffe. Hen's teeth spring to mind.
Col D R Wood (2nd Edn) No 415 refers.
