Born in 1938, he enlisted in 1955 and served for 15 years, retiring in 1969. He is noted as a good soldier and a skilled mechanic / driver. He saw service in India, Malaya, and Hong Kong. He had one charge on his record for fighting in the barrack room so would not have qualified for his LSGC. He was married with two children.
As in the Malayan Emergency, Gurkha units proved their value as jungle fighters in Brunei and Borneo. It was during the confrontation, in 1965, that Lance-Corporal Rambahadur Limbu (of the same family name as the recipient) but of the 2nd Battalion 10th Princess Mary’s Own Gurkha Rifles was awarded the Victoria Cross for attempting to rescue two wounded comrades under heavy and accurate enemy fire.
