WW1 German Malta 1914-15 Prisoner of War PoW Commemorative Medal
Made in a soft white metal alloy, silver washed (possibly has some lead in it, so please wash hands after handling). Circa 33mm in diameter, with a steel metal ring for suspension and a fairly long piece of silk ribbon attached (red /maroon and black) which came with it and which is circa 23 cms / 9 inches. Some fraying to cut edges otherwise in good condition and looks contemporary with the medal. Medal is VF condition with some edge knocks and light marks.
Obverse with the bust of the Kaiser. Reverse with the dates 1914, 1915 - 'Malta' and a picture of the bell topped tents which the prisoners were housed in. Most likely made by some enterprising Maltese jeweller to sell to the German PoW's housed on the island during WW1. Any information on this medal most welcome as I can find no reference to it. Rare.
Many German prisoners of war were taken to camps in Malta, those captured in Cameroon, German East Africa, Palestine and some of the SMS Emden's crew captured in the Indian Ocean ended up in Malta as well as Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Turkish POWs, Eygptian Political prisoners and some German civilians were interned on the island.

Please note I am reluctant to post medals outside of the UK. I would consider it if the buyer is already known to me. Please email first.
