George III / Napoleonic Saint Andrew and St George The Martyr (London) Military Association Volunteer Corps Officer's Gilt Coatee Button

Circa 19mm in diameter, slightly domed open backed gilt button with original shank and maker marked 'C. Jennens (PoW feathers) London. Minor service wear but in very good condition and rare.

Featured in Rowlandson's wonderful work as plate No 28, the accompanying notes confirm the buttons bore the initials of the corps (albeit in silver) whereas this one is gilt. Final photo provided for information only. See also the larger pattern button listed as item 70005.

The St Andrew's and St George's Volunteer Corps was a British volunteer military unit raised ion 3rd May 1798 during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. It was noted in 1803–1804 as using Gray's Inn and Finchley Common for drills.

St George the Martyr church was built as a plain chapel of east to St Andrew Holborn at the beginning of the 18th century.
