An original numbered vellum certificate issued to William Pearce born in Milor in Cornwall in 1814, but dated 1857, issued by the Board of Trade and stating he had 23 years in the Mercantile Marine including achieving the rank of Master. An original embroidered gold thread on black silk ribbon, with swallow tail ends and circa 35 inches ( 68cm ) in length. These "anonymous" cap tallies were intended to ensure that the enemy could not work out which warship was where.

The tiny white spot in the photo is not a mark on the tally, it was a spec of thread which brushed off. read more
