A brass badge as worn on the undress glengarry cap from 1874 - 1881. Originally raised in 1755, the 55th (Westmorland) Regiment's nickname was 'the Two Fives' after their numeral. Traces of the original gilt wash still evident in the nooks and crannies but mainly now back to a dark toned brass. Worn circa 1850 as worn on the Humel Bonnet, usually with the separate numerals "79" in white metal below. However, numerals no longer present. Two original dark toned lugs, some twisting with service wear, but a scarce early badge. Circa 5cm tall and 4.5cm wide. Would benefit from a light clean otherwise in good condition.
